Story Behind the Song
There isn’t a specific story to tell about this song, except that it’s pure joy to play!
I think this one has to be at least 20 years old.
I’m always stumped on what to call my little tunes like this. This one made me think of my grandma for some reason.
My grandmother – Rhea Card Matkin – LOVED hummingbirds. And waltzes. She passed away in 2024 just a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday. A little glass hummingbird always hung on fish line in her kitchen window. I inherited a couple of her hummingbird ornaments. I thought it was fitting to dedicate this song to her and call it Waltz of the Hummingbird.
When you play the left hand, you’ll see why. It flows, then it darts, then it flows and then it darts. Imagine the movements of a hummingbird. The melody is sweet and light – just like they are. I hope you enjoy it!
